Michael Joseph Savage Memorial
 
The memorial to Michael Joseph Savage, the first Labour Prime Minister (1935-1940)is located at Auckland's Bastion Point on Tamaki Drive, about 7 kilometres east of Auckland City.  This memorial with its panaramic views, overlooks the Waitemata Harbour and was built on the site of a former gun emplacement which dates back to the 1880's

Bean Rock was named after P.C.D. Bean, master of HMS Herald, is a wave washed
lighthouse which stands on a group of rocks at the entrance to Waitemata
Harbour.   Hugh Brown was the first keeper who first lit the light in July 1871
until his retirement in 1890.  Transportation to the lighthouse was by a small
rowing boat.   Bean Rock was automated in 1912
